Full movie description "Eight O'Clock Walk":Taxicab driver Tom Banning is led to an abandoned bomb-site by an eight-year-old girl as an April-fool prank. The girl is later found murdered and Manning is picked up by Scotland Yard for questioning and is later arrested and charged with murder. The trial is scheduled for London's Old Bailey. Manning's wife, Jill, convinced he is innocent, fights for and wins the sympathy of Council-for-the-Defense Peter Tanner, and he is opposed at the trial by his father, prosecuting-attorney Geoffrey Tanner. The trail is presided over by Justice Harrington, whose wife is in the hospital undergoing an operation. It soon becomes evident, following the testimony of prosecution-witness Horace Clifford, that the evidence points to Manning's guilt. During a recess, Peter Tanner sees Clifford outside the courthouse, giving candy to a young girl. Farr identifies the candy as being the same brand as that found on the murdered girl. Reviews of the Eight O'Clock Walk"Eight O'Clock Walk" (1954) is a Britnoir. It's a well put together film about a taxi driver (Richard Attenborough) accused of murdering a little girl. Most of the movie shows the travails of him and his wife (Cathy O'Donnell) before the trial and the trial itself. The prosecuting lawyer is Ian Hunter and his son (Derek Farr) is the defense lawyer. Bruce Seton is the no-nonsense police official; his appearance is mainly in the first part of the story.
Under the credits we see one spired building after another, symbols of British tradition, probity and justice. The interior photography of the courthouse continues to emphasize the staid and custom-bound methods of British justice. Time is taken in various scenes to show the judge in chambers and the lawyers. The tradition of evidence deciding a case and the tradition of a lawyer not even meeting with the accused is brought out and criticized. The movie is a critique of the system as being hidebound and oppressive to the accused, but at the same time it accords the system a measure of respect for its longevity and existence. Cathy O'Donnell pleads for some crack in the system.
The story generates a fair amount of anticipation as the evidence, all circumstantial, mounts against Attenborough. No real motive is ever brought out, a weakness in the state's case. On the other hand, the defense doesn't produce an alternative theory, at least not right away, and we wonder what will happen to Attenborough.
The film is a good production, edited smoothly, likable enough, but do not expect too much of it. It's not a movie with crackling suspense. Its tone is often more morose. The dialog and depth are not in the same league as a movie like "Witness for the Prosecution".
